During his period as head coach of the Dutch women's sitting volleyball team, John B. saw many opportunities to improve some Paralympic sports. Due to the lack of support by the international sports federations in 2008/2009, and with his background as an entrepreneur, John B. started a foundation in The Netherlands to improve the introduction, promotion, and support of various Paralympic sports worldwide.

His foundation Sport Compass responded to the need for support and, without any grants or funds, provided personal coaching and other advisory input to local communities. In his travels, John B. distributed equipment, identified partnerships locally, and cooperated with other organisations. He also delivered presentations at universities for students of Sports business & sports marketing. Besides he brought various Paralympic sports demonstrations to younger school children at primary and secondary schools and organised social sports events.

He was always active full-time in various roles for more than 60 hours a week, on a volunteering basis for his Foundation Sport Compass.
